A star studded cast that built the perfect dysfunctional family.

Genius! The Royal Tanenbaums is one of the best movies I've seen in a long while. Edward Gorey meets Days of Our Lives. True to form, Gene Hackman was scintillating. Owen Wilson was, well, Owen Wilson--delightful to the hilt. Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Bill Murray, and Luke Wilson proved to be equally stellar. A star studded cast that built the perfect dysfunctional family.

I waited almost a year until this film was out of the theatres before I saw it. I'm very skeptical of my friends' opinions, but had someone cued me in to this film's pure originality, I would have rushed to the theatres to see it.

One reason this film is so attractive is its consistency. The characters are undeniably unique and don't deviate a degree from their established personality. The structure of the film is very fluid, a story built around chapters of a book checked out from the library about the Tanenbaum family (perhaps one of Eli's novel's or maybe one of Margo's plays) narrated by Alec Baldwin. Also, the grainy, circa 1970s cinematography creates the perfect ambiance for the film. It makes the story seem fictional, obviously a film that has jumped inside a book but hasn't blurred the sharp, crisp edges of reality (the library book) with the soft, rainy lines of the story.

Completely delightful.
