Motorcycle Day finally came this year. Motorcycle day, also known as Hogs day, is much more accurate to predict the coming of spring than Ground Hogs day. Ground Hogs day occurs when Punxutawney Phil, a very fickle and reticent rodent peeks his furry nose out of the hole in which hes been hibernating all winter long to see if hell see his shadow. If yes, spring is coming. If no, the whole world is damned to 6 more weeks of winter.

Hogs day is when the weather finally gets warm enough, the snow melted enough, bikers antsy enough, that motorcycles (hogs) emerge from their long winter hibernation in the dark garage and hit the road. Its almost that we all forgot that motorcycles even exist and then with this sudden and tacit signal, everyone knows: spring is here

Unlike Punxatawney Phil, there is nothing subtle about Hogs coming out of hibernation. There are no camera crews, kitschy reporters, hard-pressed for a story, there is simply dudes on bikes (by dudes I include both genders, of course).

On Hogs Day, bikers more than see their shadow, they ride their shadow, and defy winters waning chill as they cut through the air with their sleek, iron horses. Winters long night of quiet is rudely ended as deafening motorcycles soar down the road, belching exhaust out their indolent tailpipes, an emblem of warmer weather.

There are some parallels to Hogs day and Ground Hogs day. One has Punxatawney Phil, the most famous groundhog. Hogs Day has punks and Tawni-Phil, the most famous biker, a hardened and tough looking biker, a biker who has found himself by wearing a dress and pearls and a purse and makeup, a biker who has changed his name and even hyphenated it to match his new self, Tawni-Phil, the perfect combo of both his identities, and who feels very comfortable being his own bitch, and who has single-handedly decided to put the drag back into drag racing. This is Tawni-Phil. When punks and Tawni-Phil hit the road the world knows that spring is coming.

Watch out, Punxataawney Phil. Spring is here.
