Farhan Needs Water

The other day after Kouk son do, Farhan was literally weeping because of frustration that he doesn't drink enough water. Celeste was very sensitive to his frustration and followed him out into the hall to talk about it. In order to cheer the boy up, Celeste suggested that he make drinking water into a ritual, something special to encourage him. Well, as soon as the word "ritual" came rolling off of her lips, Farhan lit up brighter than his magic crystal.

It's three days later and Farhan still hasn't begun his water campaign, not because he forgot the need to drink, not because there is a shortage of water, but because he is so worried about getting the "ceremony" right that he won't begin until it's perfect. First, he had to have the right bottle. Next, he decided that he needed the perfect holder to cary the perfect bottle. Then he decided that the ceremony couldn't happen in the day time but only at night so as to take full advantage of the mystical powers that the moon has over water. Finally, he figured that if he's going to involve the moon, what better day to begin his water campaign than the beginning of the lunar calendar. Keep in mind we're just talking about drinking more water here.

Of course Celeste and I have been abducted into this water fiasco, like lonely farm boys, abducted by extra terrestrials. After all, Celeste was careless enough to let the words "ritual" escape from her mouth within Farhan's hearing distance and to suggest the appropriate "holder."

Today, Farhan has been excitedly pointing to everything that he considers symbolic on this, his water day. (Adopt a dramatic tone here) "Look, Celeste. It's . . . raining." And at a restaurant today he asked Celeste, "Can I fill your glass?" followed by a meaningful stare as he poured water into her cup. Picking up on this drama I fought off the impulse to burst out laughing by easing off the laughter steam by expressing kind sarcasm and retorted in an overtly sarcastic tone, "Mmmm doesn't this food make your mouth . . . water?" Farhan laughed and got the message.

Alan Keele's voice rings in my ears: "Farhan. Just drink the damn water! You don't need a ritual to fulfill basic life functions. The two hydrogen and oxygen are already mixed. All you have to do is manage to get it down your throat." Nina Wise makes a counter chorus, "Farhan, this is your way of expressing something that is very important to you. You are making the desire to take better care of your self special by creating a ritual. Good for you. And even if I think it's a tad odd, I support you as you make it special." My own voice seems to sing a lovely alto's harmony between the bass of Alan and the aria of Nina. Farhan. this is getting crazy but I also realize that it is your way of handling this situation, and because I do care about you, I'm willing to tolerate these . . . shenanigans so that you can accomplish this end. And if you need a ritual to accomplish this, then more power to you. Pass the water.
