Scott hardly slept last night. Instead, he sloshed over in his big red slippers to the empty room next door and wrote in his journal for 4 hours there, relieved to find that the flourescent lights there at least WORKED. So when he slept in until noon, I wasn't surprised.

I offered him some muffins I had just experimented with (having just found whole-wheat flour in this country and having "inherited"--meaning "stole before any of the other teachers could get at it"--a mini oven from the couple that just left), which he ate with much kind praise (I covered them in jam--that helps) and then crawled back into bed. An hour later, he jumped up and was soon standing on our kitchen table trying to fix our last blinking, buzzing light.

Scott had had enough. By then, my head was screaming, and so I went back to bed and watched Scott's mania at work, wondering how long his energy would last. We all go through it. He had tinfoil up there and all sorts of little tools that he scavenged from his saxophone case. After an hour, he did manage to stop the blinking of the one but couldn't get the other two lights to work.

He came back to bed, spent and resigned to spend another afternoon there. We talked in circles, and eventually about why we came to Korea (hey, it comes up from time to time, especially when you're sick--it's a good reminder). We came mostly for US, we decided, for our marriage. For the adventure, sure. To see new lands, sure. To leave Orem, definitely. But mostly to untangle in some ways and to firm up our strength in new ways. We laughed and supposed that perhaps all this time sick in bed is not without its purposes. And perhaps it is serving more than just a mere test of patience. For two people who were relieved to have a yoga class together in part because it was time together, we can now appreciate long hours side by side. Even if it isn't, oh, IDEAL (we actually coined our room Gollum's Cave today, for surely our eyes would hurt if we were to actually get light in the apartment), this time is our Gift.
